Entrance to the port is via a long winding channel. There are fixed wharves from which boats moor either beam to or for and aft. Also there are prawn trawlers and an unused fishing boat where one can raft up easily.
Being in a small river, the water is always flat and the locals are fairly casual about who ties up where. The city centre is within walking distance and there are museums and notable mosaics depicting life and industry in the town in the riverside Memorial Park. A pub with good meals stands across from the wharf. Showers and facilities are available adjacent at the Royal Port Pirie Yacht Club.
